Growth Gone Wrong

Psalm 49:10 “For all can see that wise men die; the foolish and the senseless alike perish and leave their wealth to others.”

This psalm is a gem that the Lord led me to when I was writing this short song for @thepsalmsproject.co recently. What a wonderful truth and precious wisdom hidden right under our nose (if we put our Bibles within reach at all!)

What IS success for Christians?

“Growth” is a word we hear all the time. Grow a business, a platform, investments, income, wealth, assets, skills—the list goes on. But to what end? The parable of the rich fool puts the world’s “wisdom” to shame when Jesus shows how the man accumulated so much wealth and even bought more storage for them, only to have his life be taken from him that very night.

The psalmist in Psalm 49 observes that people are overawed to see a man grow rich (v. 16) and that they praise you when you prosper (v. 18), but such splendor remains at the surface. Do not make the mistake of being distracted by such flashy things.

If those who trust in themselves will perish, then what is our hope? The psalmist proclaims: “The upright will rule over them in the morning” (v. 14)

Who are the upright? Those who follow the Law flawlessly. But that’s right—you don’t. You can’t.

But Jesus did. And this is the good news: if you put your faith in Him, His righteousness will be yours, by grace. That and that alone is your glorious hope. Believe in Him, and you will find riches in eternity that this world can’t promise nor begin to imagine.
