Creative Work is Meaningless

"I know that there is nothing better for men than to be happy and do good while they live. That every man may eat and drink, and find satisfaction in all his toil--this is the gift of God." (Ecclesiastes 3:12-13)

As I read this chapter in Ecclesiastes, and the futility of toiling, it made me think about the nature of what I do as a creative. The way I work is usually by project, including now that I am working on a bigger project: a music album.

The writer was talking about how he undertook great projects like vineyards and parks, yet in the end he wonders, who will inherit these? And what if they only destroy them? And so he goes, "Everything is meaningless; a chasing after the wind."

To What End?

This thought humbled me as a creative, since sometimes, when I do get caught up in making everything perfect, at the expense of my well-being, I forget that these will not last forever. Yet it also begs the question, what is any of this for then?

It's comforting to know that to find satisfaction in all our toil and hard work is precisely is the gift of God. We can all work, but to be provided with our daily bread, and to even enjoy our work, are certainly blessings.

Because at the end of the day, to have, know, and fear God is the greatest thing man could ever experience.
