You’re Not Falling Behind
“Lord, my heart is not proud; my eyes are not haughty. I don’t concern myself with matters too great or too awesome for me to grasp. Instead, I have calmed and quieted myself, like a weaned child who no longer cries for its mother’s milk. Yes, like a weaned child is my soul within me. O Israel, put your hope in the Lord— now and always.”
Psalms 131:1-3 NLT
Weaned (Psalm 131) is a song I wrote inspired by the passage above. As a visionary, a dreamer, I tend to be so easily excited when I have ideas and visions of what my life could be like. Nothing wrong with that of course. But sometimes I get stuck in that state of wanting and longing, that it gets difficult to return to a posture of gratitude and contentment.
So it’s good to remind our souls regularly to be still and be quiet. Remember that we have everything that we need right now. Know that you are exactly where God intended you to be right now—yes, even if perhaps the enemy plotted to crush your spirit, our God is mightier than he. He can turn this shame, this suffering to glory as effortless as we blink. That mighty God holds your life.
If you think you’re not where you’re supposed to be, then maybe you’re looking at other people too much. Don’t compare. Look at how far the path you’ve travelled is behind you. Fix your gaze on the Lord who goes before you.
We are vessels made to be occupied by one thing only. We can deny self and choose Christ, or deny Christ and choose self. It will always be one or the other.
